For those who choose to pump for whatever reason, just so you know flange size matters! Standard issue with your pump flange sizes seem to be 24 mm to 27 mm. However if your nipple is larger or smaller you will need the appropriate size flange to effectively pump without damaging your nipples in the process. You may not be effectively emptying, setting yourself up potentially for mastitis and plugged ducts or you could be causing cuts and rub marks. Did you know the correct size will also make pumping more comfortable?
So how do you know if you have the correct size flange? Measure the base of your nipple in mm. Do not include the areola. Then add two mm, that is your size.
What should a correctly sized flange look like when you are pumping?
You should have little or no areola in the tunnel when pumping with the correct size.
Not experience nipple pain with pumping
Not see white circles at the base of you nipple or have your nipple blanch
Your nipple needs to be centered in the flange and move freely in the tunnel
You should not feel areas of you breast that still have milk inside
Who can help you size correctly? An IBCLC. You can look online and find a local IBCLC or check with your Pediatrician, some offices have in house breastfeeding support. A good resource is ICLA.org or USLCA.org both have a listing for local IBCLCs.
Happy Pumping
